First Cut

Why even have a blog? I don't know. At the moment I think it might be something to mess with when I'm bored. I have found that I do read other people's blogs simply to see how they're doing or to keep up with their lives. Saves me the trouble of calling or e-mailing. So if anyone wants to catch up with my life a bit, or see that on March 31, 2009 I was well enough to start a blog, and maybe even leave a comment, I guess that's reason enough.

I'm calling my blog "Beyond the Cutting Edge" because that's where my interests lie technologically. It's also what I called my column when I was working at Infinite Energy Magazine. Once tech is on the cutting edge, it's easy to find out about it--many science and tech writers make their livings describing the latest thing. I prefer to focus on tech that isn't even in the lab yet, but should be; tech that the cutting edge hasn't reached yet.

But this isn't going to be a tech blog, though I may talk about tech. Nor will it be a political blog, though politics will surely come up. Most of the time it will just be a diary of sorts, clean enough for public consumption, devoid of scandalous thoughts, just filled with talk of what I expected to do, juxtaposed with accounts of what I actually did.

Tonight after work I'm going to go home and shower, then take Ashley and Haley and three other kids in Orchestra to Wendy's prior to tonight's concert. While they're eating, I'll be getting a long-overdue haircut from Angela. I want my hair to be longer than I've worn it for the last 15 years or so, so I'll have to be pretty explicit in my instructions to her or she'll whack it all off like last time. After that I'll run the kids to the concert, sit through that, then come home and read or write a bit, or waste time checking e-mail and my FB account. I might also write up some feedback on a short novel I read a few days ago. The author is a friend and said she might revise it and submit it again. It was an early work of hers--I think the storyline is solid enough that it is worth her time to work on it and make it new again. There were just a few details I found confusing at the beginning that I want to point out, but I have to look at the book again to make sure the confusion was actually on the pages and not in my mind.

I guess that's enough for today. When I'm home I might add some pics to the profile yet tonight. But for now, I'm going to see if the above-mentioned friend updated her blog yet.

UPDATE: The haircut came out well. The concert was more than tedious, except for the ever-popular "Return of the Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space" piece played by the 8th grade. I added the Tesla coil discharge photo as background to my blog, but if you're reading this you know that. And I've completely forgotten why I thought this post needed an update.
