There has been much talk of late, all of it coming from some on the political left, that opposition to President Obama is based on the color of his skin. Former President Jimmy Carter said this a few days ago, and last night I saw that Bill Cosby thinks so too, though perhaps to a lesser degree. Certainly the US still has racists and bigots, but they exist in all cultures. So far the most racist thing I have heard anyone say is that white people who disagree with Obama are racists.
Being both white and opposed to Obama's policies, I take exception to that. Of the last three Democrats who headed the ticket, I actually like Obama the best. I think he is much more likable than either Al Gore or John Kerry, and much smarter than either of them. And apart from the unfortunate choice of pants he wore at the All Star game, he is certainly a helluva lot cooler than Gore, Kerry, either George Bush, or Clinton could ever hope to be (except on that aircraft carrier, where W looked great in that jacket when he got out of the fighter jet).
But Obama is a liberal, and quite an extreme one at that, in my view. I have opposed most of the liberal agenda my entire adult life. Any white president advocating the course for the nation that President Obama is advocating would draw my opposition.
Those policies of the Obama administration that I do not support are not supported because of what I am, a conservative (and an iconoclastic one at that!). You need look no deeper than that.
